RetainFrequently Asked Questions
How does Retain collect email from GroupWise?
The Retain Worker component is responsible for data collection from GroupWise. GWAVA uses Novell's Trusted Application and SOAP API technology to access data stores. Combined with Novell's Smart Purge feature, Retain will collect all message data from the Post Office level, ensuring no message is missed.
How can I make sure end users don't delete a message before Retain archives it?
Retain integrates with GroupWise at many levels. GroupWise has 2 flags that can be set at the Post Office level via Console1. This is Smart Purge - retention & purge flag are available and need to be activated before using Retain, to be certain that nothing gets deleted between archiving jobs.
What Database system can I use?
Currently, Retain supports SQL databases, version1 integrates with MySQL. Development has already begun for SP1 (2months following Release) and will support Oracle 9 & 10 as well as MS SQL 2000 & 2005.
How much disk space do I need?
Disk space planning is an important part of any archiving strategy. In order for us to help with that plan we'll need to know such things as how many PO's do you have, how big are they, how much do they grow on a yearly basis & what is your retention period? If you can provide a baseline for us to work with, we'll be happy to assist with capacity planning.
What OS do I have to install Retain on?
Retain gives you the flexibility to deploy your archiving project however you choose. Retain runs on all platforms that support GroupWise, namely NetWare, SUSE & OES Linux as well as Windows servers.
How does Storage work with Retain?
Storing email with your Retain systems will be very much like it is with GroupWise. GroupWise is in a class of it's own due to its Single Instance Storage architecture. Retain also stores data in this manner. An example of this is an attachment being sent to multiple recipients. GroupWise stores this attachment once per message store DB to maximize storage space. Retain works in the exact same manner so as to avoid bloating your storage costs. Storage is considered one to one and no additional bloating occurs, making it easier to plan you storage needs over time.
Can I give end users access to their personal archives?
Simple, Retain uses a back end piece much like the QMS system in GWAVA4. This is a web portal where end users can log in via GroupWise credentials & access their own personal archives. Administrators of course can access all archived email messages.
Is there any way to monitor the Retain Server and Worker components?
Retain provides Status indicators in many areas of the UI for jobs that are running or that have completed. You also have an email option available for notification regarding success or failure of archiving jobs. To get the most advanced reporting & monitoring capability, check out GWAVA RedLine at www.GWAVA.com.
Can I evaluate Retain before making a decision?
Absolutely, as with all GWAVA solutions, retain can be downloaded from www.GWAVA.com and provides a full featured 30 day evaluation.
