Guinevere

Guinevere—Frequently Asked Questions

Our company runs GroupWise emulation on a Windows Machine. This prevents us from running NLMs. Does Guinevere require an NLM to be loaded?
Guinevere does not load NLMs. Guinevere will run faster and more efficiently if you install it on the same computer that emulates GroupWise.

Do I need GWAVA to run Guinevere?
No. But if you own GWAVA, there are deep discounts on purchasing Guinevere.

Why do I need Guinevere if I already own GWAVA?
Guinevere compliments GWAVA by protecting your GroupWise system at the GWIA Gateway. Together, GWAVA and Guinevere ensure that email is scanned by multiple Anti-Virus products and is analyzed by more than just one Anti-spam/Anti-Virus engine.

Why does Guinevere need Windows?
Guinevere runs on a Windows workstation. It was created on Windows 95 for GroupWise 5.x systems and has continued to run on each successive version of Windows and GroupWise.

What is Guinevere?
Guinevere is a snap-in designed for Groupwise. It allows you to scan incoming/outgoing mail for viruses, add universal signatures/disclaimers, apply mail filters, and much more.

What are the supported AV Programs?
The following AV Vendors support Win9x, Me, WinNT and 2000
  • Mcafee/NAI VirusScan 2,3,4.x,5.x,6.x
  • Symantec Norton Anti virus 3,4,5,6,2000,2001,2002
  • The NAVDX integration is often recommended for Win9x machines and the NAVW32 integration for WinNT/2000. Both should work however.
  • CA Inoculan 6.0
  • Sophos Sweep All versions
  • Ikarus Scan 2.11 was the only tested
  • Command F-PROT All versions
  • Norman Virus Control 4.x,5.x
  • Other supported products: Grisoft, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Trend, Dr Solomons, Intel Landesk, AVP virus
  • Norton AV Corporate 7.0,7.5,7.51,7.6
  • Users must install the DOS VSCAND client from disc 2 of their distribution (preferably to C:\NAV), and select the INTEL LANDESK INTEGRATION. UniversalAV is probably a better solution for the NAVCE user. Alternatively, UniversalAV supports nearly every vendor. Please see the manual for more information.

Is this a Novell endorsed product?
Yes and No. Yes, various Novell employees have been very supportive and have consistently recommended this product in an unofficial sense. But there is no official "stamp" per se. We are being careful about specifying this because the software's author has had the honor of being a volunteer Novell Support Connection SYSOP and is active in the GroupWise support forums. Please don't be confused.
For general GroupWise (or other Novell products) support, these forums are the place to go. You can find them at http://support.novell.com .

What are your pricing and licensing policies?
Guinevere 2 is priced at $6.00 per User License in a 100 User Block for $595.00 and a 150 User Block for $895.00 (US). For more than 150 users, contact us. Guinevere 1.x users may upgrade at a reduced cost.
This makes it considerably cheaper than most of the competition.
Each license of Guinevere gives you the right to protect ONE GWIA running SMTP services. If you have multiple GWIAs running SMTP services, you must purchase multiple licenses of Guinevere. You do not need additional licenses for GWIAs running only POP3/LDAP/IMAP4 services, but not running SMTP services. Basically our game plan is to provide roughly 85-90% of the functionality at 20-25% of the cost.

Your support policies?
Requests for support, enhancements, etc. should be sent to support@gwava.com. E-Mail support is available to all Guinevere users. 24/7 Telephone support is also available at $3 USD per user through your maintenance contract. Your maintenance contract also includes access to all product updates during a 12-month period. Please contact us for more info.

When do you plan to support the older SMTP/MIME gateway? How about GW 4.1 systems?
This is not planned. At one point this was under consideration, but the market share of 4.1 users has dropped dramatically. If you have a large 4.1 installation, and are willing to pay a decent consulting fee, contact us.

What about using a SMTP Mailer?
I want to use a SMTP mailer engine instead of the GW client to deliver the status messages. Can I do this?
No. Sorry. This was supported at one point, and may be reintroduced if demand warrants it.

Does Guinevere support blocking SPAM?
Yes, Guinevere 2.0 supports integration with one of the best (and free) spam-blockers around, SpamAssassin. Detailed instructions are included in the manual.

Does the Guinevere workstation have to be on all the time?
Generally yes. If not, no mail will pass through - it will queue indefinitely at the GWIA. If you need to shutdown Guinevere (for a backup for example), this can be done by creating a simple shutdown file. Details are in the manual. Also, Guinevere 2 features SNMP support. You can run GWATCH or set up a simple "ping" mechanism to detect if Guinevere has stopped running.

How do I start Guinevere up automatically when I reboot?
Put a shortcut into the Startup Groups, and add the /U command line option.
Does the GW client have to be logged in all the time?
For purposes of notifications, yes. You can load any piece though - I usually leave the Address Book running as it's less obtrusive.

How can I log into GroupWise automatically when I reboot?
In many ways. They all start with putting a shortcut to GroupWise in the Startup Group. Then:
Running Windows 9x/ME, you could request to ALWAYS REMEMBER MY PASSWORD. This will login the current Network User.
Or you could select NO PASSWORD REQUIRED WITH NDS (Tools/Options/Security). That would do the trick
Or for maximal control, the shortcut can contain these switches: /@u-gwuserid /PWD=gwpassword (exactly as shown)

How do I log into Netware automatically?
Please refer to Novell's Support Site, as the procedure changes from client version to client version and platform.

How big a drain is Guinevere on the network? On its CPU? On disk space?
Not very is the short answer.
Guinevere does poll the gateway directories. That's probably the leading cause of network traffic. However, the polling delay can be adjusted. One could eliminate network traffic entirely if Guinevere were installed on the same box as an NT GWIA.
CPU wise, Guinevere is almost inconsequential. An continuously indexing POA might be a bit much to share space with, but almost anything else is good.
Spam Assassin, if implemented, can be a fairly big CPU hog however.
Guinevere only takes about 13 MB of disk space. Of course, the main drain on this space will be the Work Directory, where files coming through the gateway are decoded, decompressed, and scanned. The amount of space required there really depends on the kind of traffic you receive.

What part of my anti virus software should I install?
This depends on whether you use a command line integration or UniversalAV. Both are discussed extensively in the user manual.

Command Line Integration
Install only the "on-demand" portions of the software. Do not install any part of the software that automatically scans for virus.
